ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

 

Based at the Detour Lake Mine site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Co-op Student to join our Environment and Sustainability team reporting to the Environment Supervisor for a four (4) month winter term.

 

Detour Lake is the second largest gold producing mine in Canada with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potentialThe open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.

 

Agnico Eagle Mines' Detour Lake Mine is situated on the traditional homelands of the Apitipi Anicinapek Nation, Moose Cree First Nation, and Taykwa Tagamou Nation. The Environmental Co-op Student will have an opportunity to be part of a number of monitoring and research programs in progress to support permits and internal monitoring to prevent environmental impacts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Assist the environmental department in the field, manage samples and complete data interpretation on several large and small projects;
  • Assist in field sample collection;
  • Assist in writing annual monitoring reports including data interpretation and trend analysis;
  • Assist in data entry into designated software to track commitments status;
  • Support the team in developing EMS documentation and record keeping templates.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

Our ideal candidate has:

 

  • Student enrolled in an Environmental Science or Engineering;
  • Experience working at a remote work site is an asset;
  • Computer literate in excel and other basic software with the ability to learn a new system;
  • Able to summarize data into graphs and statistics and other visual forms for illustrating and tracking trends;
  • Knowledge of QA/QC processes for managing environmental data from commercial labs;
  • Able to perform field work in a winter environment (working in cold weather);
  • Knowledge of EMS documents and their applications is considered an asset;
  • Proven commitment to health, safety and the environment;
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  • Exceptional ability to work within a diverse team;
  • Attention to detail.
