ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

 

Based at the Detour Lake Mine Site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Specialist to join our Environment & Sustainability team, reporting to the Environment Supervisor.

 

Detour Lake is the second largest gold producing mine in Canada with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potential. The open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.

 

The Environmental Specialist will be accountable for assisting in the development and implementation of the site Environmental Management System and Compliance monitoring programs at the Detour Lake Mine.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Report writing and permit application writing
  • EMS Implementation and management, including maintaining site aspects and impacts registry
  • Coordinating data collection for NPRI and GHG emissions
  • Perform voluntary and compliance monitoring for groundwater, surface water, air, and soil
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory, permits, monitoring and reporting requirements
  • Track departmental costs and invoicing; Management plan development (annual revisions and new plans)
  • Perform inspections of work sites to identify environmental risks
  • Promote site awareness of environmental requirements and conditions for operations and provide support and advice to department heads on inclusion of environmental consideration in work plans.


 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Our ideal candidate has:

 

  • Degree in a field related to Environmental Engineering, Science or other environmental discipline
  • Minimum of one to two (1-2) years related work experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian and Ontario legislation relevant to the mining industry
  • Advanced MS Suite skills, experience with SAP and EQuIS considered an asset
  • Experience conducting stream flow monitoring / installation programs an asset
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening skills
  • Knowledge of the Ontario health, safety and environment acts and any legislation directly related to the mining industry
  • Exceptional ability to work within a diverse team
