Based at the Detour Lake Mine site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Hydrogeologist to join our Environment and Sustainability team reporting to the Environment and Sustainability Manager.

Detour Lake is the second largest gold producing mine in Canada with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potential. The open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.

The Hydrogeologist will be responsible for the management of the site water balance and assessment of mine operation impacts on surface and groundwater regimes.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with computer modeling packages and other resources to collect, analyze and interpret data to assess the most effective methods of managing available water on site and assess environmental impacts;
  • Provide support to maintain the site water balance model;
  • Estimating water yields, taking into account the utilization of water in a specific natural drainage area and assessing the relationship between precipitation, runoff, and catchment features;
  • Integrating water quality data and hydrological/hydrogeological data to determine contaminant loads for impact assessments and to optimize the discharge strategy for treated wastewater;
  • Managing environmental hydrological and hydrogeological monitoring programs and aid in the development of future monitoring programs;
  • Providing technical training to environmental staff on a field data collection;
  • Prepare permit applications (ex. Permits to take water);
  • Prepare annual reports for regulators on mine dewatering impacts;
  • Project and consultant management (ex. Drilling Programs).


Our ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrogeology/ Hydrology or related field;
  • Member of Professional Association is preferred;
  • Minimum six to eight years of related work experience, preferably in an open pit operation;
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Aquarius Time-Series , Mapping software (ArcGIS, AUTOCAD), Modeling software’s (Goldsim);
  • Familiar with data collection equipment and methods for surface flow measurements and groundwater monitoring;
  • Strong analytical and communication skills;
  • Proven commitment to safety, heath and environmental best practices;
  • Knowledge of surficial geology is an asset.
