Location: Macassa Mine, Kirkland Lake, ON

Rotation: 5/2 (Monday to Friday) or 4/3 (4 days on, 3 days off)

This role is not a Camp Based opportunity.


Based at the Macassa Mine Site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Near Surface Senior Mine Planner/Engineer to join our Engineering team.

The Macassa Mine is a high-grade gold producer, with grade improving at depth, and a key valuation driver for Agnico Eagle.  Located in the Town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, the Macassa Mine remains one of the highest gold grade mines in the world. Macassa commenced operations in 2002, and with the discovery of the South Mine Complex has been able to increase its level of production significantly over the past five years. The mine is located in an area with well-developed infrastructure, including a provincial highway, a railway system and a private airport. High-grade ore is processed at the Macassa Mill, which currently has available capacity and is located in close proximity to the mine. 

The Near Surface Senior Mine Planner/Engineer will participate in technical activities related to the ongoing development and production of the mine operation. You will ensure the safe, economical and environmentally sound operation of the underground mine, as well as keeping operations up to date with compliance and safety practice.


Duties and Responsibilities of a Near Surface Senior Mine Planner/Engineer include:

  • Develop and maintain rolling 3 Month and 12 Month Plans for the NSUR Project
  • Preparing short/medium term schedules that aim to meet or exceed site objectives and support the long-term mining plan. Identify contingency plans to overcome shortfalls in production and development. Ensure plan is appropriate for equipment and manpower levels, and that it does not exceed the ventilation or ore movement system constraints
  • Lead the planning department and manage design work required for the development and production of the NSUR underground mine
  • Accountable for the timely delivery of designs and their accuracy within planning department
  • Provide support to the various entities within the engineering department
  • Help produce budget physicals and costs for anticipated year production
  • Lead strategic long term mine planning sessions, with input from stakeholders
  • Approve and assist with plan for all mine design and planned production with focus on long-term plan
  • Examines existing designs to consider enhancements and improve mining accessibility
  • Coordinate with mine operations on a daily basis to ensure plan is being adhered to and to minimize disruptions. Complete regular variance reports and stope status reports
  • Coordinating with the maintenance and operations planning groups to optimize the mining plan, ensure sufficient mill feed and minimize disruptions
  • Manage some human resource matters (vacations, absenteeism, quality and quantity of work, etc) for NSUR Engineer team
  • Other responsibilities as assigned


Our ideal candidate has:

  • B.Sc / B.Tech Degree in Mining Engineering or Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7 year’s relevant experience in an operating mine
  • Experience in underground Hard Rock Mining Environment preferred
  • Experience in underground surveying, planning and/or mining an asset
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and presentation skills
  • Strong people skills and an ability to work in a team environment
  • High level computer literacy as applied to mining engineering. Must possess the skills to produce mine plans using software such as Deswik, Promine, AutoCAD, EPS and Advanced user of Microsoft Excel
  • Must be familiar with underground ventilation methods and the use of ventilation software such as Ventsim
  • Able to work individually, as part of a team


Physical Requirements:

  • Day Shift of up to 12 hours on occasion
  • 70% sitting, computer use, keyboard skills
  • Lifting, up to 10 kg ground to waist height occasionally
  • Occasional push pull
  • Daily standing. Occasional walking over uneven ground
  • Rarely in awkward positions – squatting, kneeling, bent over
  • Environment conditions can be: hot, cold, humid, wet, or dusty
  • Lighting is restricted, may be excessive noise, underground airflow is artificial
  • Ground conditions may be wet, muddy, slippery, sloped inclines, loose rocks and obstacles on the ground
